NORRTÄLJE MUNICIPALITY

Welcome to Mellersta Roslagen

Where forest and archipelago meet on Sweden's east coast, Mellersta Roslagen spreads out - a landscape where history and future live side by side. Here lies Norrtälje, the 'capital of Roslagen', with a charming town centre of wooden houses that tell of times gone by. At the same time, a new neighbourhood is emerging along the river, where modern buildings in glass and wood are reflected in the water. The contrasts are clear but harmonious.

The Roslagen archipelago is Sweden's most popular summer holiday destination, loved for generations. Islands such as Blidö, Fejan, Tjockö, Arholma, Yxlan and Furusund offer nature reserves, bathing bays, dock life and historical remains. At Batteri Arholma, we are reminded of the strategic importance of the archipelago. Evert Taube put Roslagen on the musical map and Astrid Lindgren found inspiration for Saltkråkan here.

For those who like craftsmanship and flavour, there is a wide range of local producers. Musteries press apples from Roslagen's farms, distilleries and microbreweries create new favourites. At markets and farm shops you'll find award-winning cheeses, seasonal vegetables, sourdough bread and flowers.

Boating is a way of life here. For centuries, guest harbours and waterways have brought both wooden ships and pleasure boats through the archipelago. The water is always close by, whether you come by your own boat, take the archipelago ferry or enjoy it from the jetty. (The modern oarsman may have swapped his veggie hat for a cap and scrolls weather apps instead of charts, but the love of the sea and dockside conversation remains the same.)

There is more to this area than the archipelago. In Skebo, Edsbro and Herräng, the history of iron processing lives on, and Rimbo was once an important railway junction. In Hallstavik, industry lives on, but so does the tranquillity of nature.

From the stately Rånäs castle to the small church in Finsta, where, according to legend, St Bridget had her first epiphany, Roslagen tells of times gone by. Along the coast there were hidden defences, and at the city museum in Norrtälje you can immerse yourself in the history of the place.

Central Roslagen offers both tranquillity and adventure. Hike along award-winning trails, paddle between islets and skerries, or sit down at an outdoor café in the evening sun. Here you are in the heart of the Roslagen region.
