Central Roslagen
The heart of Roslagen - archipelago, small town and living countryside
Mellersta Roslagen is Norrtälje municipality. This is the growing capital of Roslagen, Norrtälje, where historic wooden houses meet modern buildings by the harbour. From there, you can travel further out by archipelago transport and steamboats, towards genuine islands such as Arholma, Blidö, Fejan and Yxlan.
Along the coast, boathouses, bays and nature reserves spread out. Inland, you'll find mill towns, countryside and castles such as Rånäs and Penningby. Here you will find both movement and tranquillity, city and outer archipelago - in a living cultural landscape that has inspired both Evert Taube's songs and Astrid Lindgren's stories.

Which islands are in the Norrtälje archipelago?
Norrtälje is part of Roslagen's vast archipelago - an area with over 13,000 islands, islets and skerries. There is everything from lively islands with services and guest harbours to quiet natural islands far out in the sea.
The most famous islands in the Norrtälje archipelago include Arholma, Blidö, Furusund and Lidö. Arholma offers an outer archipelago and military history, Furusund classic summer villas along the fairway and Lidö open landscapes and bathing bays.

How to get to Norrtälje and further out into the archipelago
It is easy to travel to Norrtälje, which is the hub of Mellersta Roslagen.
To Norrtälje:
Bus 676 runs directly from the School of Engineering in Stockholm and takes about an hour. Plan your entire journey in SL's journey planner - which also shows archipelago traffic with Waxholmsbolaget.
By car, follow the E18 all the way to Norrtälje.
Further out into the archipelago:
Both regular archipelago traffic and seasonal boat lines depart from Norrtälje harbour, including the Nord/Sydlinjen and Norra båtlinjen.
Also Blidösundsbolaget operates Norrtälje with classic steamboats during parts of the year.
However, not all islands are directly accessible from here. For some tours you need to go to one of the archipelago's hubs; Furusund, Räfsnäs or Simpnäs - where additional scheduled and summer services depart.
Islands by car ferry:
Some islands are reached by car ferry, such as Yxlan and Blidö.
For specific excursion tips and information on which line applies to different islands, see the page Find out in the Norrtälje archipelago - tips and inspiration where departure ports and boat routes are described in more detail.
For greater flexibility, there are taxi boats that can be booked directly to many islands. A compiled overview of how to travel by bus, boat, car ferry and taxi boat throughout Roslagen can be found on the page Travel planners.

More about Mellersta Roslagen
The archipelago - always within reach
Here the landscape alternates between wooden town and sea horizon, between castle avenues and outer archipelago. With Norrtälje as its centre, Mellersta Roslagen spreads out from the open sea to forests and mill towns further inland.
Off the coast, one of the country's most varied archipelagos awaits. Blidö, Yxlan and Furusund are lively islands with a village feel and car ferries, while Fejan, Tjockö and Arholma have more of the tranquillity and history of the sea. There are regular archipelago services and classic steamers, and the Stockholm Archipelago Trail (internationally recognised and named one of the world's 25 best travel destinations by Time Magazine) runs through parts of the area.
It was here that Astrid Lindgren found inspiration for Saltkråkan and Evert Taube wrote unforgettable music about life in the bosom of Roslagen. Traces of that time - the summer houses, the piers and the open horizon - remain, but life here is contemporary.
Boating and stingrays
Roslagen means rowing team - a Viking name with roots in the history of coastal defence. Here, the sea has always been a prerequisite - for trade, defence, fishing and everyday life. The Väddö Canal serves as an artery for leisure boats, and the Postrodden between Grisslehamn and Åland is reminiscent of the old sea routes across the Åland Sea, where mail and people travelled between Sweden and Finland for centuries.
The modern oarsman moves just as naturally between dock life and working life - between sea, city and countryside. The vega hat may have been replaced by a cap and the paper chart by apps, but the relationship with the sea is the same.
Norrtälje city
Norrtälje is the region's natural hub. Here, wooden houses, riverside walks and a growing harbour town meet, with modern architecture in glass and wood reflected in the water, and restaurants, shops and culture close to the quayside. The town is small enough to be close - and vibrant enough to fill a whole weekend.
Mills, castles and the world's dance floors
Inland, the history of ironworking lives on in Skebo, Edsbro and Herräng. Rånäs Castle rises in the tranquillity of the castle park, and in Finsta the story of St Bridget is linked to the site. At the Pythagoras Industrial Museum, you'll encounter a well-preserved mechanical world where engines can still be started and shown to both children and adults.
Every summer, Herräng is filled with dancers from all over the world when Herräng Dance Camp transforms the small mill town into an international centre for swing, lindy hop and jazz dance - and fills the place with the joy of dance that is felt far beyond Roslagen.
Outdoor recreation all year round
Here you can hike the Roslagsleden trail through forests and cultural landscapes, paddle between islets and islands or run races such as Norrtälje Stadslopp, Jättelångt and the One Water Race, known as one of the world's most demanding challenges of its kind.
In winter, Kvisthamrabacken opens for downhill skiing and Lundåsvallen offers cross-country tracks with artificial snow. Outdoor life changes with the seasons - but never stops
A place to return to
What characterises Mellersta Roslagen is not a single attraction but the range. The tranquillity of the archipelago and the pulse of the city are within easy reach. International events and local traditions. Historic environments and new neighbourhoods by the water.
It is a place you return to. Not by chance, but by habit. The fact that the area is one of the country's most densely populated holiday homes is perhaps the clearest proof of how strongly people link their lives here.
Did you know that;
Why not take a real steamer through the Roslagen archipelago? S/S Blidösund is one of the last coal-fired steamers in Sweden and takes you on a nostalgic journey through the island world.
