The Albert Engström Museum is housed in the former home of artist, writer and satirist Albert Engström in Grisslehamn. The house has been recreated to show what it looked like when the Engström family lived here at the beginning of the 20th century, with furniture and artefacts from the time. The museum tells both about Engström's artistic work and his life as a style-forming storyteller and opinion leader.
Albert Engström was a contemporary and good friend of several of the great cultural personalities of the time - such as Carl Larsson, Anders Zorn, Bruno Liljefors, Selma Lagerlöf, August Strindberg, Elin Wägner and Prince Eugen, among others. Together they shaped Swedish art and cultural life at the turn of the 20th century, and several of them spent time here in Grisslehamn.
There is also a museum shop, the Draughtsman's House and Kafé Kalaset - a summer café with coffee and light meals.
From the museum, a beautiful walk leads down to Engström's small studio house on the cliffs by the Sea of Åland. The path follows a stretch of the Roslagsleden trail, and on the way you pass a reconstruction of the optical telegraph station from the late 18th century.
The studio is painted red on the land side and white towards the sea - like a landmark for seafarers. During the museum's opening hours, a guide is on hand to tell you more about Engström and his many roles - as an artist, writer, academy member and explorer. Just next to the studio is an old military bunker, today hidden among the rocks.
Down by the sea there is also a beach with soft sand and a view of the ferry route between Grisslehamn and Eckerö.
