Stones in different colours from the Mineral Museum in Dannemora

Welcome to the exciting world of the Stone Kingdom.

Beautiful gemstones, a fake diamond, fluorescent minerals, fossils, solid lead and unusual stones from Greenland, the Kola Peninsula and Värmland - are just a few examples of what you can see in the Mineral Museum.

In 2004, Sten Niklasson donated a mineral collection of around 600 different specimens to Östhammar municipality and in 2022 another rock collection and a fossil collection. Sten has travelled the world and collected everything from crystals to endemic minerals.

The Mineral Museum is located right at Storrymningen.

Iron ore has been mined in Dannemora since the 17th century and was the largest and most important iron ore mine until the turn of the 20th century. The ore from the Dannemora mine and the bar iron forged in the Vallon mines were then exported, mainly to England. This became a cornerstone of economic development in Sweden in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Guided tours of the mining area are organised by the Österbybruks Herrgård Foundation

"In the bosom of Roslagen on the flowering island, where the waves lapping against the shore, and the reeds waving and freshly cut hay, it smells against me sometimes, there I sit on a bench in the bersong and watch terns and seagulls"
