Ljusterö church

In the early 1750s, a new church was built on the archipelago island of Ljusterö in Österåker. The new church was built in horizontal timber, with a tower and red-coloured panelling outside the church body. The church room was plastered and whitewashed. The vault consisted of a plastered wooden barrel vault.

At the end of the 19th century, the church underwent extensive remodelling. The building was characterised by a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic styles, interpreted in the ”carpenter's delight” of the late 19th century. A tower was erected over the western part of the church, replacing an older bell tower. The exterior was clad in both vertical and horizontal wooden panels and painted in several colours. Later, the church was painted completely white.

In the church hangs a so-called votive ship, something that often occurs in archipelago churches. Votive ships are ship models donated to the church, often by people who have been rescued from distress at sea.

In the church you will also find traces of the opera singer Jussi Björling. He contributed to the financing of the church's wedding chandelier by singing at a concert in the church in 1944. Jussi Björling spent a lot of time in Österåker at his summer home on Siarö.

"In the bosom of Roslagen on the flowering island, where the waves lapping against the shore, and the reeds waving and freshly cut hay, it smells against me sometimes, there I sit on a bench in the bersong and watch terns and seagulls"
