Österåker church

Österåker church was built as a parish church, like almost all other churches in Uppland during the early Middle Ages. We do not know who started the construction in Akers parish, there were probably several great men in the parish.

Österåker church

The site of the church was the Iron Age and early medieval settlement centre of Aker, which is also one of the few place names found on early maps of Sweden from the 15th century. Near the church is a terrace that probably housed the Iron Age farm Aker. You will find several information signs about the long history of the place when you walk along Prästgårdsvägen near the church. At Prästgårdsvägen you will also find Klockarhagen. Here you will find a bell tower, surrounded by an Iron Age burial ground with about 110 gravesLink to another website, opens in new window.

During the 15th century, the church was provided with arches and frescoes, which were later painted over. The church acquired its current appearance after remodelling in the 17th century.

"In the bosom of Roslagen on the flowering island, where the waves lapping against the shore, and the reeds waving and freshly cut hay, it smells against me sometimes, there I sit on a bench in the bersong and watch terns and seagulls"
