Östra Ryd church is located on land that in the Middle Ages belonged to the Rydboholm estate. It is therefore likely that the church was built on an individual initiative, a so-called great man's church.
The oldest is the sacristy, which was probably built around 1300. It was part of an older church whose age and appearance are unknown. The builder of the current church is considered to be Anund Sture (died 1434), who owned Rydboholm Castle around 1430. The Vasa family has also been the owner of Rydboholm.
At the end of the 18th century, the paintings, except those in the choir vault, were whitewashed. The paintings have been gradually restored, most recently during a major renovation in 1991.
The church has some interesting artefacts, including a number of old oil paintings. Östra Ryd church has been named one of Österåker's seven wonders.
"In the bosom of Roslagen on the flowering island, where the waves lapping against the shore, and the reeds waving and freshly cut hay, it smells against me sometimes, there I sit on a bench in the bersong and watch terns and seagulls"
