Wira Bruk was one of Sweden's most important armouries during the time of the Great Powers. Among other things, swords were forged here that Charles XII's men used in the war. Today, Wira is a living mill environment with forges and cottages along the Wira River.
History of the programme
Wira Bruk has a rich history dating back to the 1630s, when King Gustav II Adolf and Admiral Clas Fleming founded the mill to produce swords for the Swedish army. Thanks to skilled blacksmiths, many from Germany, Wira became known for its high-quality weapons. During the 19th and 20th centuries, production shifted to scythes and axes, but as society changed, the business declined, and in 1948 the last tool was forged.
After years of silence, Wira was revived in the 1960s with restored forges, a museum and a café. Today, visitors can experience the mill's living history through crafts, art forging and the traditional Wira Games in the summer.
