Cycling in Northern Roslagen

In the area around Östhammar, Gräsö and Öregrund – as well as the industrial towns of Gimo and Österbybruk

Östhammar and the coastal roads

Around Östhammar, there are several cycle-friendly roads and routes close to the town, water, and countryside.

Health Path in Östhammar

A loop of approximately 4 km through Östhammar town centre, along the waterfront promenade at Sjötorget and Krutudden. Here you cycle close to the water, through green areas and charming small-town residential areas.

Söderön – winding country roads

Cycle from Östhammar or Öregrund towards Älvsnäs along winding country roads. On the way back, you can take a different route via Tuskö, or continue out towards Tvärnö and Raggarön before turning back.

Tvärnö – country road

A beautiful country road leading on towards Raggarön, through open meadows and with views of the water along the way. Perfect as a shorter trip or as part of a longer route.

Raggarön – country road and trails

Cycle out towards Raggarön along the country road via Tvärnö. Once there, you'll find about 17 km of trails of varying lengths and difficulties, suitable for both cycling and hiking.

Gräsö – cycle routes and tours

Start at the ferry landing on Gräsö and choose from several marked routes. The paths are connected and can be cycled individually or combined into longer loops.

 

Short walk – Gräsö (approx. 4.5 km)

A short tour through Gräsö's oldest cultivated area, past Österby and Västerby. (Feel free to make a detour to the Iron Age burial field at Gräsö farm.

Interim Trip – Gräsö (approx. 20 km)

Cycle along the west side of the island through forest and return on the east side. The roads vary between asphalt and forest track, and a short stretch requires you to lead the bike. A bicycle trailer may be difficult, but a child seat works.

Full-day trip – Gräsö (approx. 40 km round trip)

A longer trip to Örskärssundet with the opportunity to visit villages and fishing hamlets along the way. There are also flea markets and small stops along the route.

Places of Use – cycling in a historic setting

Cycle through industrial heritage sites with gravel paths, forests, and trails that follow the area's history. There are both gentler routes and more off-road cycling here.


Gimo – The Walloon Cycle Route

Start at Hammaren on Bruksgatan in Gimo. The trail is approximately 13 km long and is entirely on gravel paths, with blue and white markers along the way.

Along the route, there are signs about the area's culture and history, as well as several rest areas.

Österbybruk – Gravel roads and MTB trails

Near Österbybruk, you can cycle on gravel paths in a manor house environment or head out into the forest on MTB trails.

At the ski stadium and outdoor gym, several trails of varying difficulty start, with a total of approximately 17 km of tracks to explore.

Cycling in Mellersta Roslagen

In the areas around Norrtälje, Rådmansö, Singö and the Roslagen inland, you'll find varied cycling opportunities – from coastal roads and islands to forests, lakes and old railway tracks.

The Coastline – Archipelago Cycle Route

The coastline is a national cycle route that follows the coast through large parts of Sweden. In Roslagen, it extends from Öregrund in the north and continues through Norrtälje municipality.

The route is marked with red coastal path symbols and is of moderate difficulty. The terrain varies between asphalt and gravel, with some sections along a road.

You cycle through some of Sweden's most popular archipelagos, with several possible starting and stopping points along the way.

Gräddö - Riddersholm

A cycle-friendly route between Gräddö, Räfsnäs, Kapellskär and Riddersholm via minor roads and cycle paths – without having to cycle on the busy Rådmansövägen.

Singö & Fogdö

Over four miles of marked trails through nature reserves, forest, and open landscapes. The trails follow existing paths and gravel roads, taking you through ancient coastal cultural environments.

Early round (approx. 35 km)

A scenic tour around Lake Erken, one of the county's largest lakes. The path is mostly on asphalt and passes several nature reserves – perfect for breaks along the way.

The name means “the glittering” – a fitting description of the clear water.

Hackstabanan MTB – Åkersberga

A track approximately 4 km long through Hacksta forest, with turns, inclines, and jumps. The track primarily runs along the edges of the forest and can be reached from several walking and cycling paths.

Challenges along the course are marked with alternative route choices for easier or more difficult driving. The course is well-frequented – slow down when meeting others and make them aware you are coming.

Campus MTB Trails – Norrtälje

Approximately 3km of woodland trail between Lommaren and Norrtälje campus, with around 40 metres of elevation change. The trail crosses running paths on several occasions – show consideration and slow down when meeting others. Suitable for the experienced MTB cyclist.

Färsna MTB Trails – Norrtälje

A trail approximately 5 km long in a forest environment with varied difficulty. You will mostly cycle on easy-to-navigate paths, but some sections are more technical and require a bit more experience.

Kvisthamra Bikepark – Norrtälje

Two trails connect to the ski slope – one for cross-country and a more easy-to-ride trail for beginners. The XC trail is approximately 3 km with elevation changes, while the beginner trail (800 m) is shorter and easier to cycle.

Lundåsvallen MTB – Häverödal

An established mountain bike area with several trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels, from approximately 800 metres up to 3.5 km. There are both easier courses for beginners and more challenging trails for those who want to develop their technique.

The area is designed to suit many types of cyclists – from children and beginners to the more experienced. In addition to forest trails, there is also a pump track that is perfect for practising technique.

MTB – Alunda

Trails connected to illuminated cross-country ski tracks and a toboggan run, where parts of the area are used for both cross-country and downhill. Here, there are opportunities for varied cycling in a forest environment.

MTB – Östhammar

Östhammar has several mountain bike trails for different levels. CK Stabil, among others, is responsible for the Börstil track (XCO), a technical singletrack trail marked in blue and white, with elements of roots, rocks, and more challenging sections.

At the ski stadium and outdoor gym, several mountain bike trails start in a forest setting. In total, there are approximately 17 km of trails of varying difficulty, with clear signage for length and level.
