Bruno Liljefors in Österbybruk in 2026
Bruno Liljefors - artist life in Österbybruk
Bruno and Signe Liljefors moved to Österbybruk Manor in 1917, where the family lived for 15 years. By this time, Liljefors was an internationally recognised artist and is still today one of the world's foremost nature painters, known for his realistic and impressionistic interpretations of wildlife.
This summer's exhibition at Österbybruk Manor tells the story of life in the artist's family and how the local nature inspired his iconic motifs. The exhibition is organised in collaboration with Gustavianum in Uppsala, which holds one of the largest collections of Liljefors' works.

Is the manor house haunted?
Österbybruk Manor is one of Uppland's most talked about places when it comes to ghost stories and supernatural experiences. Over the years, podcasters, Youtubers and ghost hunters have visited the mansion to document strange phenomena - from wheelchairs that are said to move on their own to unexplained noises in the parlours and cellar vaults.
The manor also offers popular ghost walks, where visitors can learn about both the dramatic history of the place and the most famous ghost legends.
For those curious about the supernatural, Österbybruk Manor is an obvious stop.
Discover Dannemora
Dannemora mine - Sweden's most important iron ore mine
The Dannemora mine has played a crucial role in Sweden's industrial development. For several hundred years, the mine supplied the iron ore that laid the foundation for Swedish iron exports and for many of the country's mills and forges.
Mining shaped both the landscape and the people who lived and worked here, and Dannemora is now recognised as one of the most important areas of industrial history in northern Uppland.
The Great Clearance - Sweden's largest hand-dug mine shaft
The Great Clearance is one of Dannemora's most impressive industrial monuments and a unique visitor attraction.
The huge mine shaft is entirely hand-dug and provides a powerful insight into the labour and knowledge required to mine iron ore in the past. Here the visitor is met by both historical weight and dramatic environment.
Ice Mine, Mining Museum & Mineral Museum
In Dannemora, there are several ways to immerse yourself in the history of mining. The Ice Mine offers guided tours and climbing in an unusually beautiful mining environment, while the Mining Museum and the Mineral Museum tell about the bedrock, minerals and life around the mine.
It also organises mineral hunts suitable for both children and adults.
Österbybruk
The importance of the Walloons for Swedish iron production
Österbybruk is a classic poppy mill where poppy smiths and mill patrons left their mark on iron processing. The Walloons' knowledge of forging and steelmaking made Österbybruk an important part of Sweden's iron history and contributed to the high quality for which Swedish iron became known.
Manor house, forge and industrial heritage
In Österbybruk, you are greeted by a well-preserved mill structure with straight streets, red workers' dwellings and the stately manor house by the water. There is also the smithy, the Orangery Garden, the Saddler's Lodge and the industrial monument Ånghammaren - environments that together give a clear picture of life at a historic mill.
Culture, music and exhibitions in a historic setting
Today, Österbybruk is a living cultural environment where history is combined with contemporary experiences. Concerts, art exhibitions and theatre are arranged here in unique mill environments, making the visit just as interesting for those interested in culture as for those who want to experience the atmosphere of the place.
