History
Since the 16th century, the island was probably used as a place where sailors buried their deceased comrades. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it served as a burial ground for victims of plague and cholera epidemics. Construction of the top-secret defence facility began during the First World War in 1916, but by the time it was completed and the Second World War broke out, it was deemed outdated and the accommodation unhealthy due to damp. However, the site was used for military exercises until the 1960s. In the 1990s, the fort was converted into a museum. Visitors can see the cannons and gun emplacements, the battle control centre, the kitchen and the regiment. It is an exciting tour for both adults and children. There is also the possibility to stay overnight in the accommodation.
