Furusundsleden is first mentioned in writing in the 13th century. In 1463, the Union King Christian I landed here with his naval fleet on his way to Finland in a crusade. He had a compass rose carved into the mountainside, which can still be seen today. An inn and a tavern were built in the 17th century, in the 18th century King Gustav III had one of the country's largest crown distilleries built, and in the 19th century Furusund became known as a bathing and spa resort, and the first steamboats brought bathers here.
In 1882, the wealthy court jeweller - who was also a theatre manager, director and actor - Christian Hammer bought Furusund at auction for SEK 70,000 and transformed the island into an Art Nouveau summer paradise. It became a very attractive place for society, royalty, artists and writers. Music, parties and theatre followed one another and famous personalities such as August Strindberg, Harriet Bosse, Albert Engström, Anders Zorn, Evert Taube, Carl Larsson and later Astrid Lindgren spent a lot of time here.
