The nature reserve is located on the northern part of the island, with valuable archipelago forest, deciduous forests, natural wetlands and Lake Stormaren with plant and animal life. The biodiversity of the environments must be preserved, and the reserve must be accessible for outdoor recreation in a way that does not jeopardise the natural values.
Gisslingö is located 8 kilometres northeast of Kapellskär and is the easternmost of the larger islands in the outer archipelago of Roslagen. Only a narrow strait separates the island from Korsö in the south, and the two islands are slowly but surely growing together.
Waxholmsbolaget serves Gisslingö for most of the year, except when there is ice.
No services. Nature reserve.
A map from 1697 shows "Gäslingeöhn" and that the border between the parishes of Rådmansö and Vätö ran right across the island. During the Russian raids in 1719, the population of the islands of Tjockö and Tyvö took refuge in the castle on Gisslingö, a wooded rocky outcrop surrounded by bogs and marshes. The island originally belonged to Lidö manor but was bought out from Lidö by Carl-Erik Pettersson in 1899. He had lived on Gisslingö since 1879 and spent his first 20 years as a crofter before buying the Vätö part of the island.
Apart from the farm buildings on western Gisslingö, the island is undeveloped. The right of public access applies in the nature reserve, which means that you may camp for a maximum of two consecutive days in the same place.
