Högmarsö - a historic shipbuilding community

The island has been inhabited since the 16th century and when the shipyard was built 150 years ago, a community grew up with both a school and a church. Today there are about 30 residents on the island, but with the summer holiday homes the population grows to about 1000 people.

History of the programme

Several shipowners, including the "Blidökungen" Johan Österman, started a shipyard in 1876. Jonas Petter Elfving was appointed manager. Ships were built here using sustainable crawling technology instead of the traditional riveting technique. In 1918, steel ships began to be built and the name was changed to Furusunds Slip- och Varfs AB. In the 1930s and 1940s, there was also a shipyard for pleasure boats next to the shipyard, and there is still a small shipyard that carries on the traditions.

"In the bosom of Roslagen on the flowering island, where the waves lapping against the shore, and the reeds waving and freshly cut hay, it smells against me sometimes, there I sit on a bench in the bersong and watch terns and seagulls"
