History of the programme
The island was already inhabited in the Middle Ages by 25 people. The first boatman was given the island at the end of the 17th century and his croft still exists. On the west side of the island there was a brickworks that was in operation in 1875 and 1900. In 2004, the County Administrative Board of Stockholm County established the first Brottö Archipelago Farming Cultural Reserve to preserve the small-scale farming that is so typical of how people have made a living in the archipelago. They also have Scottish Highland cattle, which are reminiscent of our older farm breeds. They are hardy cows that graze and keep reeds and weeds away from the coastal meadows.
