In the 17th century, Lidö was owned by Bengt Oxenstierna, who built a magnificent Baroque castle on the island. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by the Russians in 1719. In 1769, Lidö was bought by Matts Person-Holmers, captain of the East India Company, and originally from Arholma. He built the current manor house on the ruins of the old baroque castle. From the 1920s until 1945, Lidö was home to Sweden's largest mink farm. It ceased when the City of Stockholm bought Lidö and turned the island into a summer home for worn-out housewives. Today Lidö is owned by the Archipelago Foundation. Large parts of the island are undeveloped with beautiful walking paths and unspoilt nature.
