History of the programme
Ljusterö was unique in Roslagen because it was very densely populated throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Thanks to Ljusterö's location as a barrier between the inner and outer archipelago, many people were able to make a living by delivering fish, wood and sand to Stockholm for several centuries.
The name Ljusterö is thought to come from the word ljuster, which was a common tool for catching fish, especially eels. At the end of the 19th century, steamboat traffic began to move in the archipelago and thus Ljusterö was discovered by the city dwellers in a different way. Artists Anders Zorn, Carl Larsson, Bruno Liljefors and J.A.G Acke were all here and were inspired. Östra Lagnö was called the Skagen of the archipelago and Ljusterö is still an artist's island.
