Norröra - Astrid Lindgren's "We at Saltkråkan"

Norröra is best known for the fact that most of the TV series were filmed here, and in the summer there are guided salt marsh tours with s/s Blidösund. Norröra is believed to be one of the first populated islands in Roslagen and during the 14th century the island belonged to the Penningby estate. Today, only a few families live here all year round. In summer, around 130 households live on the island.

History

Hunting and fishing have been the main industries on all the archipelago islands, and there were farmers on Norröra from the 16th century. The village was burned by the Russians in 1719 but was rebuilt in its current location. Norröra's oldest cottage is preserved in the village, as well as a boatman's cottage from the 19th century and a mission house from the early 20th century. Several of the island's oldest houses were moved here from Svartlöga, including Saltkråkan's ”Snickargård” which was moved here in the early 1800s, but there are also many large residential houses that were built on site when many people moved to Norröra during that century. The island was royal hunting ground until 1920.

"In the bosom of Roslagen on the flowering island, where the waves lapping against the shore, and the reeds waving and freshly cut hay, it smells against me sometimes, there I sit on a bench in the bersong and watch terns and seagulls"
