History of the programme
In the 19th century, shipping was an important industry and many ships were built and had their home harbour on Tjockö. On the eastern side of the island, the ships waited for good weather before travelling on to Åland. A large part of the population were pilots and lighthouse keepers on Söderarm and also farmed on Tjockö. Fishing and seal hunting were common occupations. Tjockö was notorious for smuggling and other less flattering things. But most people made a living from fishing, farming and construction work. When the military, the navy and the coastal artillery had facilities on the islands, many Tjockö residents earned their income there.
Culturally, Jenny Nyström lived many summers on northern Tjockö and created the modern version of Father Christmas here. John Bauer also lived on Tjockö for a time and painted the famous work The Fairy Princess here. Ivar Lo-Johansson was conscripted to Tjockö during the Second World War, which he describes in his books The Soldier and Freedom.
