Yxlan - Pilotage, customs and telegraph community

A long narrow island with large wholesale villas with glass verandas and small red cottages where city officials lived. There are about 300 residents on Yxlan today, but in the summer the population increases significantly when all the holiday home guests and tourists come to the island. Despite this, you will find peace and quiet and a genuine archipelago feeling here on the island.

History of the programme
Yxlan takes its name from the village of Yxlö and the population can be traced back to the Stone Age. There are several ancient remains with burial grounds and rune stones. During the Viking Age and the Middle Ages, Yxlan was an important area for trade and shipping. In modern times, Yxlan has mainly been an agricultural and fishing island. Köpmanholm is known as a pilot, customs and telegraph fort. The island has a varied landscape with cliffs, forests, meadows and sandy beaches. It also provides a rich wildlife with deer, foxes, hares and various bird species. Marine life is also varied with fish and shellfish.

"In the bosom of Roslagen on the flowering island, where the waves lapping against the shore, and the reeds waving and freshly cut hay, it smells against me sometimes, there I sit on a bench in the bersong and watch terns and seagulls"
