Ceramicist Katarina Persson is opening up her pottery workshop to show an ongoing renovation project where 13th-century ceramic floor tiles from Lund are to be interpreted and newly produced to be part of an outdoor area planned for 2027.
English tiles or encaustic ceramic tiles have a deep-impressed pattern which makes them well suited for flooring exposed to heavy wear. The technique was developed during the 12th century and had its heyday under Henry III in England, remained popular until the 16th century when they fell into obscurity, only to be picked up again during industrialisation in the 19th century. Patterns and motifs are often geometric but also with certain figurative elements, frequently drawing inspiration from flora and fauna to together create a carpet-like impression when laid together. Katarina manufactures the tiles in the same artisanal way as they were made during the 13th century. Wooden moulds with the pattern are pressed into the soft clay, to then be filled with a liquid clay in a different colour, dried, scraped clean so that the pattern emerges, fired and glazed.
In the workshop you will get to see parts of the handcrafted process leading up to the finished tile.
