Starting at Lilla Torget, Anders Djerf will guide us through Norrtälje's early industrial history. We'll visit the sites of some of the workshops and industries that have existed in Norrtälje, including a thread spool factory with pine chair manufacturing, a power station, a rifle factory, Norrtälje Steam Sawmill, the steam sawmill, a steam brewery, several water-powered mills, and one of the largest, the Pythagoras Motor Factory. We'll hear about shipping in a bustling harbour and when the railway arrived in Norrtälje.
As early as 1623, the Rifle Factory was established in Norrtälje, by order of Gustav II Adolf, who the year before, in 1622, had granted Norrtälje town privileges. Trained gunsmiths were brought from Germany, arriving in the town with their families – for many decades, half of Norrtälje was German-speaking! A factory street with both housing, small smithies and kitchen gardens was laid out along today's Hantverkargatan, and the Germans started the town's first school as early as the 1640s and built their own church.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Pythagoras motor factory, founded in 1897, alongside the somewhat older Norrtälje Foundry, were Norrtälje's largest employers, with Pythagoras exporting hot-bulb engines worldwide.
Increasing steamboat traffic and, from 1884, the railway, increased freight capacity.
