In the industrial historical landscape around Österbybruk, there are remains and buildings that bear witness to one of the prosperous ironworks communities that emerged during the 17th century. Walloons arrived here with knowledge of iron processing, skilled craftsmanship, and their customs, which were developed and adopted by the local people.
Seventeen artists from the Fiber Art Sweden network accepted an invitation in 2024 from Österbybruk for an exhibition premiere in the large venue known as Ånghammaren. Based on the ironworks and its history, the group has conducted workshops and individual artistic investigations, which, with a diversity of working methods and techniques, are displayed under the title Glitter and Gloom. The exhibition will showcase the diversity of expressions, materials, and techniques that the concept of Fiber Art represents today, with an opening reception on June 13th.
Fiber Art Sweden is a network of artists who, through various means and methods, promote discussion and the exchange of ideas within the textile sphere of interest. In an expanded and inclusive situation, textile work implies an unlimited set of possibilities and approaches. The term "fiber art" is an international designation for a freer handling of fibres, denoting a contemporary art form that originates from textile production methods and/or traditions.
In the broadened artistic field, FAS applies a nomadic and mobile strategy. Continuously and consistently, FAS has, through its activity, sought out new locations and contexts, and adopted new positions. Compiled information and the network's current 35 members are presented on the website.
In parallel, during the summer, an exhibition of smaller works by the same artists will be displayed at Sadelmakarlängan.
