A lecture on the interface between art and craft
Bea Szenfeld (born 1972, Poland) trained at Beckmans College of Design. Her work is characterised by experimental and artistic garments made from unexpected materials, mostly paper, created entirely by hand in her studio in Stockholm. She has developed paper craftsmanship into its own distinct genre, and her garments have been worn by artists such as Lady Gaga, Björk, and Laleh.
Szenfeld's works have been exhibited at, amongst others, Dunkers Kulturhus, Liljevalchs Konsthall, the MET Museum in New York, Kulturen in Lund, Sara Kulturhus, the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm, and the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis. She has received a number of grants, including the Gannevik Grant, the Stockholm City Culture Prize for Art, the Sven Harry Art Prize, the Swedish Church Culture Grant, the Swedish Arts Grants Committee's working grant, and was awarded a silver medal in handicraft by the Royal Patriotic Society.
Recycling and remaking are also themes that she likes to return to, for example in the TV programme Gokväll on SVT. She is on the board of Stockholms Hantverksförening, is part of the jury for Ung Svensk Form and also runs paper craft workshops.
Before the lecture, Bea will hold a workshop on creating paper flowers in coloured coffee filters. 3 May at 12.00-15.00.
