Meet-up at Lilla Torget, outside the Tourist Office.
During a walk along the Norrtäljeån river, our guide Anders Djerf highlights the great importance that Roslagen and its archipelago have historically held for authors and writers.
During the hike, we will make several stops for readings from selected works inspired by Norrtälje and the Roslagen archipelago.
Going far back in time, we find the Primary Chronicle, a 10th-century tale first recorded in the 12th century by Russian monks, today only known through a 14th-century transcript. It tells of Rurik, who in 862, with his ”sons,” is said to have sailed from Roslagen ”to bring order to the great land in the East,” thereby laying the foundation for the Kievan Rus' – modern-day Ukraine.
Centuries have passed, and many have since found inspiration for their writing in Roslagen. We have Albert Engström, August Strindberg, Nils Ferlin, Astrid Lindgren, Sven Barthel, Tove Jansson, Vilhelm Moberg, Sten Rinaldo, Bertil Kumlien, Roland Svensson, Harald Lindberg. Esse Jansson, long-time cultural editor at Norrtelje Tidning, was also a poet. More recently, John Ajvide Lindqvist has written his chilling novels. In 2025, Joanna Wåhlin and Selene Hellström released their ”99 voices in Roslagen.”.
We conclude the literary walk in the Roslagen Museum's garden, ”Faktoriparken”.
