We get an image of Norrtälje from 125 years ago, with a society house, warm bathhouse, cold bathhouse, music pavilion, and a throng of well-dressed guests. Many guests returned season after season to the spa, which, during its nearly hundred years, created prosperity in the town. The spa era began in 1844 after the town doctor, Pehr Georg Palmgren, discovered that the mud from Kvisthamraviken had a healing and soothing effect. Selected spruce trees with an invigorating scent were planted to be inhaled during the ”gruel walk” in Granparken. Bathing guests registered for the entire summer season or shorter periods. More and more guesthouses in the small town filled up with overnight guests.
The Societetsparken gradually grew to its present size through land reclamation. Steamboat traffic to Stockholm, which began on a small scale in 1846, developed, as did traffic on the narrow-gauge railway that started in 1885. The end came in 1938 in connection with the anxieties leading up to the outbreak of the Second World War.
