Women and apple trees

Moa Martinson's 1933 novel depicts the lives and friendships of women at the turn of the century.

With down-to-earth language and strong social pathos, Women and Apple Trees are given new life on stage. Moa Martinson's story about women who together
endures poverty, sorrows and betrayal, this becomes a new and powerful theatrical experience. At the heart of it is friendship, which provides strength when life is at its hardest, and on stage, we meet her beloved characters in a drama as
burning now as at its release in 1933.

Sally and Ellen grow up in the poor districts of Norrköping in the late 1800s
The tale. When they meet again as adults, they become each other's sanctuary. Ellen is the resilient mother in a destructive marriage, a woman who wears silence as a shield. Sally is her opposite – outspoken, direct, and fearless.
Together they challenge their destinies and find strength in sisterhood. Around them, children teem in a daily life filled with toil, hardship, and the struggle for survival, a world where friendship can be the difference between despair and hope.

Artistic team

Kvinnor och äppelträd is dramatised by Tora von Platen (När vi var samer, 2024) and directed by Julia Marko-Nord (Jag for ner till bror, 2024), with music by Martin Hederos (Soundtrack of Our Lives).

On stage we see Emilia Roosmann, Maria Sundbom, Mårten Andersson, Tuuli Heinonen and Emil El Hayek Grudemo – five actors bringing a timeless story of female friendship to life.
