Winter in Roslagen

Cross-country skating in the Roslagen archipelago

Experience winter in the frozen Roslagen archipelago - a beautiful, wild and unique place in the world. When winter sets in and the ice settles between the islets and skerries, a landscape opens up where nature's terms prevail. Here you glide over mirror-like natural ice, sometimes so clear that the bottom is visible below you in the shallow parts. On other days, the ice is rough, snow-covered or difficult to interpret - and requires even more attention.

Cross-country skating here is a real adventure. It is magnificent and peaceful - but also demanding. The glory can border on the dangerous, which is why it requires knowledge, judgement and respect for the ice. The rewards are great: the song of the ice, the rhythm of the skates and the feeling of being in the midst of the raw beauty of winter.

Important to know about skating on natural ice. ⚠️ All skating on natural ice is at your own risk. Ice conditions can change rapidly and vary within the same area. Conditions can differ from day to day - and even during the same trip. Always check the current ice conditions, wear the right equipment and never skate alone.

ICE AWARENESS - BEFORE YOU SET OUT:

Cross-country skating on natural ice requires both knowledge and experience. In the outer archipelago, it is particularly important to be prepared and never take shortcuts.

Think about this:

Never travel alone, be at least two, preferably more

Examine the ice continuously, use ice picks and pay attention to changes

Avoid weak areas, straits, headlands, bridges, inlets and outlets

Be extra vigilant during wind and weather changes, the ice can change quickly

Tell someone where you are going and when you plan to be back.

This should always be included:

ice studs (around the neck)

- ice pick

- lifeline / lifeline

- backpack with crotch strap (acts as buoyancy aid)

- change of clothes in a waterproof pack

- mobile phone in a waterproof case

Did you know that;
...in the Roslagen archipelago, winter ice has always been used as a natural route between islands and the mainland. When the ice was bare, people, animals and goods were transported across bays and straits - by sledge or on foot - long before bridges, ferries and winter roads existed. Ice made it possible to build, trade and keep the archipelago alive even in winter.
