NATURAL AREAS

Old house and powder magazine

At Krutudden and Gammelhus there are many places to enjoy nature - close, easily accessible and right by the water. Krutudden is an outdoor recreation area close to the city centre on a headland that extends out into Östhammarfjärden.

Walkway to Krutudden, Östhammar

In summer, it is a leafy park with a swimming area and a jogging track. Various music and cultural events are also organised here. Plenty of barbecue facilities As the area is so close to the town centre, it is easy to bring lunch or a snack here. At the far end of Krutudden there is a picnic area with a picnic table, barbecue facilities and information about the bay and life below the surface. The picnic table works well for wheelchair users. Right next door is a barbecue area with a shelter. There is usually firewood available, but feel free to bring your own wood or coal. If you walk on the footpath in the direction of Gammelhus, there is also a barbecue table on the left after the bridge. There are also barbecues at Sjötorget on the other side of the water. On the small island outside Klackskär's campsite there is a simple concrete ring for barbecues. Throughout the area there are benches to take a break, and large grassy areas perfect for a picnic blanket when the weather permits. At Kvarngården you can take a path up the mountain and get a nice view of the bay. Gunpowder storage in the past Gunpowder Point used to store gunpowder in a magazine at a safe distance from the town. The gunpowder was used in the local mines. Animals grazed on the island and, until the early 1920s, the area was considered outlying land. The small footbridge to the island was built in the late 1920s. Before that, the island was reached by rowing boat or by the passenger motorboat Max.

"In the bosom of Roslagen on the flowering island, where the waves lapping against the shore, and the reeds waving and freshly cut hay, it smells against me sometimes, there I sit on a bench in the bersong and watch terns and seagulls"
