NATURAL AREA

Oxnäsets nature reserve

Oxnäsets nature reserve is located in Rådmansby on Rådmansö and is 7.7 hectares in size. The reserve was established by the municipality in 2002 with the aim of preserving a very valuable natural forest area with plant and animal life and geoscientific phenomena.

Trees with moss.

Oxnäset is varied with damp areas, rocky areas and bare rocks next to the water. The area is important for outdoor recreation. It is mainly the beaches that attract visitors.

Unspoilt forest land
The nature reserve consists of woodland that bears few traces of forestry activities and is unaffected by exploitation. The area has probably been used as outlying land and forest pasture further back in time. A hundred-year-old coniferous forest dominates in the reserve. Spruce and pine are the most common tree species. The forest was affected by the storm Alfrida in 2019 and the trees that fell have been left behind, but the paths are carved.

Traces of the ice age
Oxnäset is located in the part of the country with a terrain type known as the rift valley landscape. The highest parts are located in the centre of the reserve. These reach about 15 metres above sea level and slope steeply downwards. The eastern and northern edges of the reserve border Norrtälje Bay and the shores consist mainly of rocky outcrops. The rocks have been ground by the ice sheet and in several places there are clear ice grooves.

High nature values
On the meagre rocky areas, pine trees spread out together with occasional deciduous trees and juniper bushes. In the southern part of the reserve there is a section of mixed swamp forest. Mostly spruce grows here, but there are also elements of alder and birch. The area has interesting flora and fauna. The nature reserve is home to a number of signal species associated with old-growth forests. The wood fungus flora is quite rich in species, and the unusual species spruce bark has also been found in the area. Rare vascular plants, such as marsh violet and woundwort, are found in the vegetation of the mixed swamp forest. The red-listed species green shield moss has also been found in the reserve.

Free development
The natural values within the reserve are primarily linked to old coniferous forest, moist swamp forest and an abundance of dead wood. A guideline for the management of the reserve is that the vegetation should be allowed to develop freely. Trees and shrubs, both living and dead, should be left untouched. Hollow trees, dry trees, high stumps and flames on the ground must be preserved.

"In the bosom of Roslagen on the flowering island, where the waves lapping against the shore, and the reeds waving and freshly cut hay, it smells against me sometimes, there I sit on a bench in the bersong and watch terns and seagulls"
