NATURAL AREA

Rörvik nature reserve

Rörvik Nature Reserve includes most of Ramviksudden, which extends into Bagghusfjärden. The nature reserve was established in 1981 by the County Administrative Board and Norrtälje municipality manages the reserve. The area is botanically valuable and one reason for the creation of the nature reserve is the presence of some ten orchid species.

A path through the forest.

Traces of past land use
In the nature reserve there are several traces of the historical use of the land. In more open areas, there are many species favoured by the past and there are a large number of trees with traces of deciduous harvesting, known as pollarding.

Lund vegetation with rich flora
The vegetation in Rörvik consists mainly of sparse to grove-like deciduous forest with a rich shrub layer. The dominant tree species is oak, but maple, ash, aspen and elm are abundant. The flora of the grove is rich with species such as common ragwort, woodruff, spring pea, horsetail, desm bud, water lily and St Peter's lily. In more open areas, there are remnants of a heath-favoured flora with species such as Adam's and Eve's, clustered viburnum and curled dock.

A calcareous seashore meadow/wet meadow is found in the southern part of the area. Seashore meadows are rare in the municipality and in Stockholm County. Although Rörvik's seashore meadow is small, it is of high quality, with large numbers of meadow bulrushes and marsh marigolds, as well as the marsh moss.

Inviting environment for birds
Groves and other forests with a high proportion of deciduous trees and undergrowth attract many different bird species. In spring and early summer, birdsong is heard from tits, thrushes and warblers. The roseate spoonbill, green warbler and marsh warbler are among the less common bird species found in the reserve. The presence of old pollarded trees in the area also means that many insects thrive here.

Restoration of open spaces
Ramviksudden has been dominated by deciduous trees for a very long time, but in the mid-20th century there was a significant colonisation by conifers. This colonisation was followed by overgrowth. In order to recreate the former appearance of open land and deciduous trees, the area's management today is largely linked to previous forms of use, including grazing and haymaking.

"In the bosom of Roslagen on the flowering island, where the waves lapping against the shore, and the reeds waving and freshly cut hay, it smells against me sometimes, there I sit on a bench in the bersong and watch terns and seagulls"
