Stockholm Archipelago Trail – Furusund

Within 7.2 kilometres you will find archipelago nature, old summer residences and an unusual amount of cultural history. Here is the Compass Rose from 1463, the 18th-century windmill and settings with strong connections to August Strindberg and Astrid Lindgren, among others.

Hike on Furusund

The stage on Furusund is 7.2 kilometres long and runs through large parts of the small island, past older housing, archipelago environments and several of Furusund's best-known sites. The hike can be started at the ferry terminal or the Furusund Värdshus and it is recommended to walk it clockwise.

It is a suitably long walk for a few hours on foot, with plenty of cultural history along the way and short distances between stops. Most of the route is easy to walk. On the west side of the island there is a shorter, more hilly section, which is why the stage is classified as moderately difficult.

The gateway to the northern archipelago

Furusund has long been an important location along the shipping route through the northern Stockholm archipelago. The island is known for its maritime history, its charming summer houses and the famous compass rose from 1463.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, Furusund developed into a well-known summer resort that attracted authors, artists and other summer visitors. August Strindberg and Astrid Lindgren are among the names associated with the island. Many of the houses and environments from Furusund's time as a classic summer resort still remain and are part of the walk through the island.

Get to Furusund

Furusund can be reached year-round with SL bus 632 or 634 from Norrtälje. During the summer season, Waxholmsbolaget's archipelago boats also run from Stockholm via Vaxholm.

The North-South Line, which connects piers and islands throughout the archipelago, also stops at Furusund. In summertime, Furusund is also served by the classic steamship S/S Blidösund.

From Furusund, the toll-free road ferry runs across the Furusund Channel to Yxlan, making it easy to combine the two stages.
