The leg on Yxlan is one of the longer stretches of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail in Roslagen. The hike is approximately 24 kilometres and suitably starts at the ferry terminal in Köpmanholm.
The trail runs through large parts of the elongated island, where pine forests and open meadows alternate with rocky shores, small cottage areas and older village environments. Along or near the trail are, among other things, the lake Träsket, the lighthouse and Stortallen – an old pine tree that has become one of the island's landmarks.
With 24 kilometres to walk, this is primarily a full-day hike, but it is also possible to choose a shorter section of the route. Plan your day according to the bus and boat timetables and pay attention to the sections where the hike runs along the narrow country road.
Yxlan is an elongated island between Furusund and Blidö in the northern Stockholm archipelago. Here you will find older village environments and summer cottage areas, but also long stretches where forests, meadows and rocky shores take over.
The terrain is undulating and varied. Almost half of the stage runs on a trail and roughly as much on a gravel road, with shorter sections on tarmac and grass.
Yxlan gets its name from the village of Yxlö in the middle of the island, and the island's population is mentioned in writing as early as the 12th century. Today, nearly 300 people live year-round on Yxlan.

Köpmanholms Lanthandel is a good starting point for food, basic services and local information. Feel free to bring what you need for the day, especially if you plan to walk the entire 24-kilometre stage.
Yxlan can be reached year-round by public transport and car ferry. The island lies between two road ferries: the Furusund route between Furusund and Yxlan to the north, and the Blidö route between Yxlan and Blidö to the south.
From Norrtälje, an SL bus runs via Furusund and the ferry across to Yxlan. During the summer season, an archipelago boat also runs from Stockholm via Vaxholm, and the North-South Line stops at several piers on Yxlan.
Plan the journey according to bus, boat and ferry timetables, especially if you intend to walk the whole stage.
