OUR

Art warning organises Art safari during the Easter holidays with open studios and exhibitions along Route 288. Art Easter in Österbybruk takes place simultaneously at the manor house and in the galleries of the mill environment - a sign of spring for art lovers.


Östhammar & Öregrund Spring Market
usually organised on different weekends at the end of May or beginning of June, with crafts and funfairs.


Östhammar Week
is celebrated every year around the city's birthday at the end of March with cultural activities, music and gatherings.


Östhammar City Race
is an annual running competition organised in spring, usually in May, with courses running through the city centre streets and along the waterfront. The race offers several distances for children, recreational runners and competitive runners, creating an active and spectator-friendly running festival in Östhammar.


SUMMER

Tailgate Drive-in Flea Market in the north of the country is a large summer flea market where sellers set up their cars and sell stuff straight from the boot. The flea market, which is one of Sweden's largest tailgate flea markets, is open Saturdays 10-14 from mid-May to the end of August (except Midsummer's Day), where you can find everything under the sun.


Veteran car meetings
weekly meetings at Sjötorget in Östhammar, for vintage car enthusiasts, often held every Thursday during the early summer and summer, from May to September.

 

Öregrund Monday is a summer event with sing-alongs and music at Fyrskeppsudden in Öregrund. Organised by the Öregrund Lions Club, the sing-along evenings are held on several Mondays in July, with local singers and guest artists leading the audience through summer evenings filled with fellowship and song.


Boat Week
in Öregrund is one of the biggest highlights of the summer, with boat races, family activities, concerts and a festival atmosphere in the harbour. The week usually takes place in late July and early August and offers activities for both children and adults.


Roslagsloppet
is a classic offshore race boat competition that attracts both racers and spectators from all over the country. The race is usually included in the Boat Week programme around the end of July/beginning of August, with start and finish in Öregrund harbour - a fast-paced festival for both motorboat fans and visitors.

Öregrund Music Festival is a summer festival of classical music in the historic surroundings of Öregrund. The festival brings together both established musicians and young stars, and often begins with traditional musical elements in the city environment. Organised in July, it attracts music lovers of all ages.


Öregrunds Badortsdagar
is a traditional summer event where Öregrund regains its classic seaside resort atmosphere. During the days, there are activities, music, performances and a summery feeling in the harbour area - usually in mid-August every year.

 

Forsmark Meet is a large and popular car rally in the historic mill environment in Forsmark. The event, which is usually organised during late summer in August, brings together everything from American cars and classic vintage vehicles to motorcycles and custom builds. The exhibition, the crowd, the food and the award ceremonies create a popular and family-friendly car festival in a unique setting.


The fire festival in Österbybruk
is an atmospheric late summer festival usually organised in August, where fire, light and water meet in spectacular evening shows. The mill environment is filled with fire shows, torchlight swims, illuminated fountains and water games, along with music, food and marches that create a magical experience for young and old alike.

 

AUTUMN


Östhammar Adventure Race (ÖAR)
is an established multisport adventure in late summer where teams compete in running, cycling, canoeing and orienteering through the forests, coast and archipelago of Roslagen. With courses of up to 12 or 24 hours, participants are challenged both physically and mentally in a spectacular competition that combines endurance, co-operation and nature experiences in Östhammar municipality.


Östhammar & Öregrund Autumn Market
usually organised on different weekends at the end of September or beginning of October, with street fairs, crafts and funfairs.

Östhammar Culture Week is an annual cultural festival in late October-early November with music, performing arts, exhibitions and activities throughout the municipality for all ages.

Lions Christmas Market at Österbybruk Manor is a popular Christmas market in early November, with crafts, delicacies and an atmospheric setting in the manor grounds - often considered the start of the Christmas market season.

 

WINTER

Östhammar's Skyltsöndag traditionally coincides with the first day of Advent and features a Christmas market, open shops, marches, tastings and activities in the city centre.

 

Christmas market and Skyltlördag in Öregrund during the second weekend of Advent, with a Christmas market at the local community centre, open shops, marches and an atmospheric Advent atmosphere throughout the city.


Knotted mace
in Gimo and Österbybruk
is a festive celebration at Twenty-day Knut (13 January) with roots in older folk traditions where Christmas is danced out. In Gimo, Bruksgatan is filled with parading participants in creative costumes and large masks, and thousands of visitors gather to watch the carnival and the imaginative floats. Similar traditions are also celebrated in Österbybruk and on the square in Östhammar with activities for children and families, and the whole event is characterised by music, community and a festive atmosphere.

 

The Lindman Race is a recurring winter classic on Gimo Ski Centre - a classic cross-country ski race with several distances and mass start for the longer races. The race is a seeding race for the Vasaloppet and attracts both elite and recreational skiers aiming for long-distance classics like Cykelvasan and Vasaloppet, while children's and youth classes turn the day into a folk festival at the ski stadium.

Nature, landscape and archipelago

Northern Roslagen in Östhammar municipality ranges from deep forests and living countryside to open sea and a vast archipelago. A variety of natural environments meet here, exciting story and rich plant and animal life, from wild orchids and rare butterflies to lakes, wetlands and coastal landscapes.

The archipelago offers islands of different character and accessibility. Grass Island can be reached by car ferry and serves as a starting point for further journeys by passport boat. From here you can get to Örskär, a classic lighthouse island in the sea, where it is possible to visit the lighthouse and enjoy sweeping views of the horizon.

fox stones is a popular excursion island, especially for school groups and families, with open fields and farm animals roaming freely - sometimes sharing the rocks with a grazing cow. In the area there are also Vässarö, a well-known camp and activity island with trails and outdoor activities, which can be reached by pass boat from Singö in central Roslagen.

Active experiences all year round

Northern Roslagen offers many opportunities for a active outdoor life all year round. The archipelago and the coast invite you to boating, canoeing and fishing, as well as bath from beaches, cliffs and jetties at the sea or at lakes further into the landscape.
Hiking trails can be found along the coast, on islands and through forests and open landscapes.

Scenic routes are well suited for cycling, both for leisurely walks and longer excursions. The flora trails run through vast areas of land with clear wilderness feeling. During late summer and autumn mushroom and berry fields, and in winter there are well-kept ski tracks and favourable conditions for long-distance skating when the ice is in place.

For those looking for more challenge there are experiences like Via Ferrata climbing i Dannemora ice mine and high altitude railways, providing new perspectives on nature and landscape.

Small towns, coastal life and everyday life

In coastal towns Öregrund and Östhammar meets small town charm and seafront locations, with a vibrant range of shops, cafés and restaurants with a view of the water. Along the country roads you will find farm shops and self-service stalls with locally produced raw materials and crafts, and during the summer, villages and communities are filled with flea markets.

Northern Roslagen is characterised by the rich history of ironworks and the dairy farm that shaped the area. Places like Forsmark, Österbybruk and Gimo houses well-preserved manorial environments, parks and cultural institutions that are still part of everyday life.

Here, historic environments meet modern enterprise, and many of the towns have had an importance far greater than their size. Hiking trails Along the coast, around lakes and through working environments provides insight into how the landscape and communities have evolved over time.

Events and seasons

Around Easter, open art tour studios and galleries, and when spring arrives, the country roads attract motorcyclists and car enthusiasts alike. Summer brings major events such as Roslagsloppet, Boat Week in Öregrund, Öregrunds music festival and Resort days, but also on recurring elements of summer life such as vintage car meetings, singing and flea markets.

In the autumn, both spectators and participants gather for events such as the multisport race PISCES and The Word Festival, with a focus on literature and storytelling. In winter, there are well-groomed ski trails at Gimo Ski Centre, while at the same time Christmas markets, Christmas signage and atmospherically lit city centres bring life to the darker season.

Did you know that;
Östhammar was founded in the 14th century and was then called Hamar. In 1368, the town was granted its town charter by King Albrecht of Mecklenburg.
