Here the sea is never far away. The archipelago and the mainland are closely intertwined, and with ferries, marinas and bus connections to the outer archipelago, it's easy to explore the islands' possibilities, whether you're staying for a day, a weekend or a lifetime...

- Want a taste of the archipelago without travelling far? Here you'll find coastal villages, vibrant culture and outdoor activities close to nature - just a short journey from Stockholm. The character of the archipelago varies from island to island. Husarö, Finnhamn and Ingmarsö offer everything from vibrant village communities to tranquil nature reserves, while Ljusterö, one of the archipelago's larger islands, har inspirerat författare och konstnärer genom tiderna. Stockholm Archipelago Trail, som nyligen utsågs till ett av världens bästa resmål av TIME Magazine, går genom just Finnhamn, Brottö och Ingmarsö och erbjuder en unik möjlighet att uppleva skärgården till fots.

 
But Södra Roslagen is more than its (over 1000!) islands. There are also historical sites and cultural environments to discover. "The seven wonders" – utvalda av invånarna själva – tar dig med på en resa genom berättelser och platser med atmosfär. Från Biskopstunas medeltida borgruin till Roslags-Kulla unika träkyrka. Wira Bruk berättar historien om smederna som en gång tillverkade rikets viktigaste vapen och på Siaröfortet ekar kustförsvarets historia genom gångarna djupt inne i berget.
 
Den som söker aktivitet hittar det här – vandra genom djupa skogar, cykla längs slingrande vägar eller ge dig ut på vattnet med kajak. För den äventyrslystne väntar även multisportlopp, triathlon och vattensporter för alla nivåer. Utmana dig själv i Ultimate OCR, en hinderbanetävling som lockar deltagare från hela landet.

The Åkers Canal winds through the landscape and is a perfect place for canoeing and boating. The historic canal has long been an important transport route and is today a popular destination for boating visitors. Åkersberga, the centre of Österåker, has everything you need - a small-town feel with shops, restaurants and good connections to both Stockholm and the archipelago.

When it's time to energise, the local cuisine reflects both the sea and the countryside. Freshly caught fish, Italian gelato and modern home cooking - tradition and innovation meet at the same table.

Discover the culture

Museums, heritage centres, cultural and historical sites of interest

Church of Östra Ryd

Östra Ryd church is located on land that in the Middle Ages belonged to the Rydboholm estate. It is therefore likely that the church was built on an individual initiative, a so-called great man's church.

Ekbacken is Österåker's hometown park - a beautiful natural environment where you can have coffee, experience performing arts and see exhibitions.

Siarö Fortress

Siarö Fort was built during the First World War as part of the modernisation of Stockholm's defences. Today, the fort is an attractive place to visit in the summer, with a museum, café and historical tours.

The White House

One of the houses at Ekbacken is Vita huset, which was originally a white building. The house was built in the 18th century, and was once a vicarage that stood by Österåker church.

Experience history at Wira Bruk - a place where craft tradition and culture meet in an idyllic setting. Here you can wander among the forges, visit the museum, enjoy good food in the restaurant and discover unique art jewellery in the shop. In summer, there are guided tours and the magnificent Wiraspelen - a performance you don't want to miss! Welcome to one of Österåker's seven wonders.

Länsmansgården

Länsmansgården has a history going back several hundred years. Several sheriffs have lived in the manor house, maintaining law and order. Today, the farm is managed by, among others, the art association and Åkersberga garden society. The environment is a fantastic place to experience and enjoy all year round. Hackstaff tracks

Hackstaspåren is located right next to Österåker sports centre. It is perhaps the municipality's steepest track. If you're looking for a real challenge, you can also head up the old ski slope. Hacksta has 850-metre, 1.3-kilometre, 2.5-kilometre and 5-kilometre tracks. All tracks except the 5-kilometre track have electric lighting. There is an obstacle course along the 2.5 kilometre track.

Roslagsleden - stage 6 Wira bruk - Penningby

Wira bruk-Penningby, 22 km, Stage 6 of the Roslagsleden trail takes you through a multifaceted hiking experience from the historic Wira mill to charming communities such as Bergshamra and Penningby Castle. Through varied nature and along gravel roads, you enjoy swimming at Gunnsjön and discover cultural gems along the way.

Lake loop in Trastsjöskogen 12km

If you walk Sjöslingan you get beautiful views of Södersjön. Here you can take a dip. If you have a fishing licence, you are welcome to sit down and fish. There are several nice picnic areas with benches and tables next to the lake. Sjöslingan also connects to Skogsslingan.

Blue trail 7 km - stage 4 (Prästfjärden - Domarudden)

The Blue Trail is a hiking trail that offers 35 kilometres of hiking through fantastic and varied cultural landscapes. It also connects to the Roslagsleden trail if you want to vary or extend your hike. The Blue Trail runs from the harbour in Vaxholm, via Bogesund on the beautiful Bogesundslandet, to Domarudden in Österåker. A nine-kilometre connecting trail links the Blue Trail to the Roslagsleden trail at Löttinge in Täby.

Forest trail in Trastsjöskogen 5.6 km

Skogsslingan, 5.6 km If you want to take a long walk, you can choose Skogsslingan. From there, you can extend your visit and take a detour onto Kulturslingan or Barnträskslingan. You can also continue to Sjöslingan where you get beautiful views of Södersjön. Here you can take a dip. If you have a fishing licence, you are welcome to sit down and fish. Next to the lake there are several nice picnic areas with benches and tables.

Örsö - Archipelago idyll with altitude and history

With its highest point at 42 metres above sea level, Örsö offers magnificent views of the central archipelago and a sense of seclusion in the middle of the open seascape. Here you are met by quiet forest paths, bathing-friendly rocks and traces of a long history - from the 17th century crofting life to today's quiet island life. For those looking for nature, silence and a genuine archipelago feeling, Örsö is an undiscovered gem well worth a visit. Pack a picnic basket and take the Waxholm boat to an island that offers simplicity, views and timeless charm.

Ljusterö - the artist island where culture, nature and archipelago life meet all year round

Ljusterö is a large island with a wide range of amenities and 2000 permanent residents live here. In summer, the number grows to over 10,000. There is also plenty to do and discover - golf course, museums, art, crafts, farm shops and restaurants.

Husarö - the pilots' island with swimming bays, history and blueberry tales

There is an entire village preserved from the 19th century, with both houses and boathouses. There are also lovely bathing spots, a pub, a shop, small cottages, a guest harbour and a pilot museum. Pilots were already here in the 1400s.

Cemetery Island - from historic burial ground to exciting coastal defence museum

The island is home to the Siarö Fort, an exciting underground museum where you can see the impressive defences built by the Swedish Coast Guard to protect our coastline during the First World War. There are also scenic surroundings with cliff-top bathing areas and beaches. The island has a guesthouse with a café and restaurant, as well as a guest harbour for visitors with their own boat.

Fåglarö - archipelago idyll with history, nature and community

Fåglarö has a typical archipelago nature with cliffs, beaches, forest, meadows and plenty of hiking trails. As late as the 1950s, the island had a vibrant agriculture, but today the island is dominated by holiday homes.

Mjölkö - historical idyll with bathing cliffs, summer meadows and crofting life in memory

The island is a lovely little gem in the Saxarfjärden with walking paths, bathing mountains and summer meadows. The name Mjölkö probably comes from the milk that was collected from the summer grazing cows and then transported onwards. Mjölkön belonged to the Margretelund farm. In the 1950s, plots were divided up and sold to holidaymakers.
