The island is named after the reddish feldspar and red granite. It is one of the few islands that was not burned down by the Russians in 1719. The island has fine old buildings from the turn of the century but no permanent residents. There are many fine bathing bays and just before the First World War, summer guests found their way here. Prince Wilhelm was one of them.
